I will cover everything needed from A to Z to make you start your own blog in the next 30 mins. Keep reading.
If you get stuck at any step, catch me on Facebook. Message me there and I'll revert as soon as I see the message.
Why are you starting a blog?
Whether you want to share your thoughts, ideas, or simply want to communicate with the people, you can start a blog.
However, the blog is not just a means of communication anymore, it has become an additional source of income for many people around the world including me.
The blogger makes money from the blog through advertisements such as Google Adsense, Affiliate Marketing- selling other's products, selling their own products or service, Selling E-book, Courses, or simply consulting people.
It helps you build the authority & brand online which is the most important thing as of today.
Because once you become an authority within a particular domain, you can do the wonder. People listen and buy products/services that an authoritative person recommends.
If you run a company, you can blog about different products of the company and its features. You can also talk about the new product launch, features and how it will help solve a particular problem.
IF you are a Fitness Coach, you can start a blog and teach people how to be fit or if you a Dietician, you can teach poeple how to lose weight with a balanced diet.
Or simply, if you are collegue going student and have interest in Gadgets, latest technology, you can start a blog on technology and write about cool gadgets, upcomig gadgets, tips & tutorials that can help with learn something.
How Did I Get Started
I use blogging to brand myself, help people start a blog & make money online. I'm a full-time Blogger, Affiliate Marketer & Digital Marketing Consultant.
For me, I started blogging back in 2006 when I used to work with a Civil Engineering Consultant Company in my city. I got to know about blogging through one of my friends who used to make money through Google Adsense.
He didn't tell me much but I knew there is something we can do online to make some money.
I started to research on the internet (back then, there were not many resources available) and came across this website that used to give $0.25 for every single classified ad posted on various classified websites.
There was a joining fee but I had no extra money to invest. I arranged the money with the help of my mother and joined this company.
My job was to search for Free Classified websites and post companies' advertisements on these classified websites. So I used to work day and night to find such websites and place ads.
I worked whole month and at the end of the month, I received my first check that was less than the joining fee I paid.
I was happy that I'll keep doing it and receive such checks every single month but it didn't last long. The company closed its website and nobody knows where they went overnight.
It was not just me, there were thousands of people who paid joining fee, everyone lost their money.
I learned It was an MLM business- Multi-Level Marketing where you recruit people to join under you and get paid.
But, during all this time, I searched a lot of other things and knew there are legitimate ways of making money online. One day while I was searching for ways to make money online, I got to know about Freelance websites where you can grab freelancing work.
I won a lot of simple tasks from these websites that helped me start my own blog.
That was the turning point and I never looked back since then. I started several Adsense, Affiliate websites made money out of these and sold many of them!
Today, I've multiple blogs and websites that helps me living a good life.
If you want to make some extra income along with your 9-5 job, a blog can help you achieve it.
Blogging lets you be your own boss and choose your own hours to work. You work in the morning or night, it is totally your choice.
You need not stick to 9 to 5 jobs and listen to the arrogant boss. Work from the home, office, or even while you are traveling.
You just need a laptop with an internet connection to set up your office just anywhere, let it be a lawn, a park, or a Starbucks cafe.
If you keep doing the good work, people from around the world get to know you by name, talk about you, quote you in various magazines that help with personal branding, and eventually open doors for bigger opportunities.
So a blog can not only make you money, it can make you a celebrity as well (that's a long way).

Another successful blogger Matthewwoodward shares his income reports which show he is making really good money through blogging.
There are thousands of other examples who are making a fortune.
But, it wasn't easy for them. It took several years of continuous efforts, time, money to reach where they are at today.
So if you want to start a blog to make money, you can start with a $10 monthly income target, then take it to $100, then $500, $1000, and then $2000, $5000, $10,000, and even more in coming months.
Step-by-Step Guide to Starting a Blog
Enough of motivation. I know you are pumped up to Start a Blog right Away.
Let's get to the step-by-step process to start a profitable blog that I'll cover in detail.
9 Steps to Start a Profitable Blog in the Next 30 Minutes
Here is a quick overview of starting a blog.
- Select A Niche.
- Select the Blogging Platform.
- Register a Domain Name.
- Buy Reliable Web Hosting.
- Install WordPress on BlueHost (or HostGator).
- Do the Basic Setup.
- Add Content.
- Promote your Blog.
- Make Money.
Step-1: Select A Niche
Niche selection is the most important and fundamental step in starting a blog. If it goes wrong, all the hard work that you'll put in will be wasted. So you need to be very careful about Niche selection.
Here is the best practice that can help you explore Niche ideas
Brainstorm-
You can start niche selection by starting with Brainstorm. Think about the topic you are most passionate about, something that interests you, something you are able to write about, and keep going.
Why I say keep going because blogging needs a lot of patience. It is found that most people give up blogging within 3 months of starting their blog.
However, I shouldn't be solely about your interest if your target is to make money out of your blog. It is not necessary that something you are passionate about is profitable in blogging or has a big enough market to monetize your blog moving forward.
So apart from your interest, you should consider things like how you'll be able to generate profit out of it.
You can start the brainstorming process by picking your laptop, open an excel spreadsheet, and write down 15-20 topics related to a particular niche you want to start a blog around.
Ask yourself, what you are passionate about? what things amaze you? what is your interest? and choose the most relevant topic to start your blog.
Just think of those 20 random topics. You must do that because moving forward, you'll do a lot of writing stuff.
Check Topic Trend in Google: Seasonal Vs Evergreen
You also don't want to target a seasonal topic or the topic that has unstable search volume over the last 12 months.
You can see the search term "best weight loss pill 2019" has an unstable search over the last 12 months. And, the search term "weight loss 2019" has a downward trend.
We do not want to select any of these two! We want to start a blog for the long term. Hence we should select evergreen topics.
If we see the trend for the keyword "Weight Loss Exercise" for the last 5 years, it is very much stable. It means your blog will always have the potential to grow always further. You should select this kind of topic in the long run.
Narrow down Niche- Choose Specific Niche
Your niche shouldn't be too broad because there are a lot of authority websites that wouldn't let you gain much traffic as most of the positions in Google and other search engines are occupied by them.
For example, if you've chosen Weight Loss, it is a very broad niche and it is almost impossible to rank for this term as you can see, there are 2,710,000,000 results and the website like healthline.com is ranking #1 for this keyword.
When you move down the page, you'll see the whole page is full of authority websites that are very hard to outrank in Google.
So what you can do?
You need to narrow down the niche further to target a specific set of people.
Here is how.
Scroll down to the bottom of the page and you'll see the "Searches related to Weight Loss" section. In this section, you'll see some long-tail keywords such as "Weight Loss Friendly Foods" or "Weight Loss tips at Home"
You will notice that these topics are not as competitive as "Weight Loss" and the website which shows up for these keywords are less authority that you can outrank.
You can also use the Google autosuggestion tool to have more niche ideas. Here is how you can do it.
Go to Google and Start typing "Weight Loss" when you hit the "Spacebar" on your keyword, you'll see a lot of suggestions automatically show up.
You can create a list of 10 such keywords and check how many people search for these keywords.
This is a very important step as we do not want to choose any such topic that people don't search at all or have a very low search volume.
Check Keyword Search Volume
Check how many times people search for the keyword in a month that you've selected. There should be enough search volume for the keyword else there is no use in selecting this keyword.
It is because our main motive is to send as many visitors to our blog as possible. One way of doing it through Google search. If the keyword doesn't have much search volume, you can not expect much traffic which is a mandatory requirement for monetization.
Let's see how to check the monthly search volume.
Go to Keyword Planner
Sign in with your Gmail account and you'll see something like this. Click on "Discover new Keywords".
Enter the keywords you want to check the search volume for. For example, I've entered the "Weight loss exercise" and got a whole list of keywords.
I was able to get 1268 keywords.
We need to select the keyword that has at least 1000 Avg monthly searches. I've highlighted the keywords which are ideal for a blog.
Here you can see "best exercise to lose weight" has a search volume between 1k to 10k which is good. Similarly "the best exercise for belly fat" has the same search volume and a good keyword to target.
Check if the Niche is Profitable
You check the profitability of a Niche by searching for different marketplace if there are products being sold in that niche.
You can check out the networks like ClickBank, CJ, ShareAsale, JvZoo, Offervault, Amazon, etc.
For example, I checked for Weight Loss on OfferVault, and here are the results.
We can see there are tons of weight loss related products on Offervault. So this is a profitable Niche to go ahead and create a blog around it.
Here is the most profitable Niche, if your interest is any of these niches, you are good to go. However, these are broad niches, you need to drill them down to specific ones.
- Health.
- Weight Loss
- Make Money Online
- DIY
- Home Improvement.
- Self-Help
- Finance
- Dating & Relationship
- Technology.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:1
- Brainstorming to find suitable Niche.
- Check the Niche trend with Google Trend- Seasonal Vs Evergreen.
- Narrow down Niche- Find more specific Niche.
- Check avg Keyword search volume
- Check if the Niche is profitable
This process would have been much much easy if you had SEMrush Tool
I use this tool because it helps me save time and quickly suggests the most profitable keywords within seconds. It serves all the purposes that we've discussed in this step.
So instead of checking everything manually, we can use SEMrush to complete Step:1 in no time. I've written down a complete tutorial on How to use SEMrush for keyword research.
You do not have to do anything manually. This software is very smart and calculates everything it is own which is the best part. So being a beginner, if you are not able to understand some steps, you can use SEMrush.
A SEMrush tool is a must-have tool for Bloggers because you'll be needing this tool all the time while performing keyword research, to know the competition, to know if a keyword is profitable, who all are your competitors and what strategies they are following, what keywords they are ranking for, what keyword ranking their blogs have, etc.
So if you could get this tool, you will streamline most of the things.
Step-2: Select the Blogging Platform
The next step is to Select the Blogging Platform.
There are several good Blogging platforms but not all of them are good to get started. Many of them are super complicated and newbies get puzzled about how to do use them.
These are the Top blogging platforms available today:
- WordPress
- Blogger
- Wix
- Squarespace
- Drupal.
- Weebly
According to w3techs, WordPress accounts for 36.70% of websites over the internet as of April 1, 2020, followed by Shopify, Joomla, Drupal, and Squarespace.
You can see a big chunk of websites on the internet use WordPress. Having said that, it is my choice as well!
I have several blogs and all of them use WordPress blogging platforms including this blog.
Why WordPress?
WordPress is FREE-
Yes, WordPress is FREE for life. You do not have to pay a single penny to use WordPress.
Simple & Easy to use-
WordPress is one of the most simple, user-friendly yet a very powerful CMS that anyone can use. You do not need to have any technical skills in order to use WordPress.
Easy to Install-
It takes hardly 1 minute to install WordPress and start using it. It can be easily set up for your blog by following on-screen simple instructions.
Reliable and Stability-
WordPress is a reliable software that has been around for several years. I haven't seen the CMS is down for maintenance or for any other reasons ever in my 12+years of blogging journey.
Easy Update-
WordPress developers keep taking feedback from the users and improve it. The present-day WordPress CMS is far better than it used to be a few years back.
The most important and convenient thing about WordPress is that whenever the developers update the software, you get a notification on your Admin dashboard.
You can update to the latest version with the click of a button. Easy Peasy.
Millions of Themes-
There are millions of WordPress themes available on the internet that you can purchase and install on your blog.
Whether you have a Fitness, Travel, Technology, Business, Finance, or any other type, you have a WordPress theme available for all the categories (I'll show how to install and configure a theme in this article).
Clean Coding & Filing Structure-
WordPress is built with clean coding and all the files are neatly arranged under different folders and files. The developers follow the coding standards that help with the proper functioning of the CMS as well as with quick fixes.
WordPress is lighter and faster-
Like I mentioned earlier, WordPress coding is super simple and the developers use coding standards. It makes WordPress one of the fastest blogging platforms on earth.
Your website should load within 2 seconds as per Google guidelines. If it is not, you are likely to rank lower in Search Results.
Millions of Plug-ins
The best part is, you don't need to have coding knowledge at all to make a dynamic website. There are plenty of Plug-ins available (free as well as paid) that can help you set up a full-fledged website that collects data from the users.
For example, if you want to add a Contact Us form, you can do that with a simple Plug-in called Contact Form 7.
Download the plugin, install it from the Admin dashboard, activate it, put the shortcode wherever you want the form to appear.
WordPress is SEO-friendly-
This is the most important aspect of WordPress. Sooner or later, during your blogging journey, you'll come across the term SEO. SEO which means Search Engine Optimisation is a technique to optimize your website to be able to rank higher in search results.
WordPress is SEO-Friendly, however, you can further optimize your WordPress blog with SEO plugins like Yoast, All-in-One-SEO, RankMath, etc.
Mobile-Friendly-
Today, the internet is readily available, thanks to technology which increased mobile users all across the globe. Hence, it becomes very important that your website is Mobile-Friendly.
If it is not, the visitors who will access your blog on a mobile device will a scattered design. Also, Google dislikes websites that are not mobile-friendly and don't rank them for mobile searches that will result in less traffic.
There are tons of other reasons why should you use WordPress for your blog and it is not possible to mention all of them in this post.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:2
- Learned what are the Top Blogging Platform.
- Chosen WordPress over other blogging platforms.
- Learned why WordPress is good to get started – It is simple & easy, reliable, easy to install, easy to update. It has free & paid themes, free & paid plugins available. It is SEO-Friendly, mobile-friendly, has clean coding, super light & fast loading
Step-3: Register a Domain Name
Take blogging as a business if you really want to make money out of it. Relating it to offline business, whenever you start it, you book a name for the business so that nobody else can take it. It is reserved for you for forever!
Similarly, for online business (blog) we choose a name here too and call it a DOMAIN NAME.
The Domain Name is the identity of your blog. Anyone wants to visit your website, they have to type the domain name in the browser.
Here are the important points to be taken into account for a Good Domain Name
Like I said domain name is very important for your blog, hence you should choose one wisely. Here are the important points to be considered while considering a Domain Name for your blog.
Easy Pronounceable-
Your domain should be easily pronounceable. You shouldn't use difficult words in the domain name. If it is easy to pronounce, people will be able to easily quote your website. Easy-to-pronounce domains have an edge and more chances of being shared by word-of-mouth.
Brandable or Generic
I prefer the brandable domains over the generic ones. The brandable domain wouldn't only help you establish your blog as an authority but it will help your blog grow faster. A brandable domain increases the overall value of your blog as well.
Memorable
Your domain name should be easy to remember. Do not use jargon in the domain name that people find difficult to pronounce and keep it in their minds.
The memorable domains are more likely to get social shares and quoted during the general discussion
Keyword in Domain-
Having a keyword in the domain name is an advantage. It sends Google a positive signal and the chances of your blog being rank increase.
While EMD (exact match domains) are not much useful these days, in the long run, the PMD (partial match domains) can have an edge.
So you may search for the domain that has a keyword in the domain name.
Shorter is better
The shorter domain name is always good to have. They are easy to remember, write, and sharable with your friends through word-of-mouth or social media websites.
While most of the domains are taken already, it wouldn't be easily possible to grab a short domain name.
Do the research (explained in the next section) and create a list of a few short domain names.
.Com, .Net, .Org or any other extension?
There are many domain extensions but the most famous is.Com, .Net & .Org. While .Org is suitable for nonprofit organizations and .Net is mostly registered to protect the brand, I always prefer only .Com
According to Domaintools research, there are about 140 million .com domains registered followed by .tk, .cn, .de, .net etc.
We can say more than .com extension accounts for more than 50% of all the websites.
Also .com domains are universal and you can register one irrespective of your country location unlike some other extensions like .uk wherein you need to be a United Kingdom citizen in order to register .uk extension domain name.
The same goes for the .us extension. You need to have the United States address in order to register .us domain extension.
Avoid Hyphen & Numeric
Select a domain name without a hyphen or a number. I personally don't like it for many reasons. One, it just doesn't look nice to me and they can't be easily branded.
People tend to forget such domain names as hyphens and numbers make the domain name difficult to remember and quote other people.
The domain name should have only characters in my views. It looks good.
Avoid Trademark issue
One of the most important things to be remembered is to check the Trademark term. Before registering a domain name, you should check whether the selected domain name matches any brand or a company name that is already registered.
You can check it through uspto.gov website database. It has all the registered trademarks. You can go to the website and enter the domain name to check if the domain name is not taken or your domain name has don't have any copyright word in it.
For example, you can not use any domain that has "Google" word in it as Google is a registered trademark.
You can also type the name in Google and see if any company has already taken that name.
How to get Domain Ideas?
BrainStorm-
Think of keywords that define your blog. For example, if you want to start a blog in the technology Niche and your target audience are those who want to get the latest update on smartphones, laptops, and other technical stuff. You can brainstorm and think of different combination with the word "tech"
You can ask your family members, relatives, and friends to suggest the combination of two words namely, "tech" being one of them. The word "tech" could be a prefix or suffix.
Domain Suggestion Tool –
The other way to get domain idea is to use domain suggestion tools. There are plenty of them over the internet but my favorite is Lead Domain Search.
For this example, I entered the keyword "Technology" and it suggested 4943 available .com domain names.
I can scroll down to see all of them and create a list of a few catchy ones that will go with the niche of my blog.
Where to Buy a Domain Name?
If you search domain registrar on Google, you'll find thousands of them but the reliability is very important. We must book a domain name through a reliable registrar.
I've used many of the overtime and these three are my all-time favorite.
- Namecheap
- Godaddy
- NameSilo
Nowadays, I'm registering all my domains with Namecheap because I find it more convenient and the most important thing, you get privacy protection free with every domain for life.
The other registrar charges separately every year for Privacy Protection.
What is Privacy Protection?
Whenever you register a domain name, you have to give all your personal details such as the name, complete home address, e-mail, phone number, etc., and you shouldn't let this information available in public for anyone to read.
You can imagine the risk of having your personally identifiable information being public. You may start getting unsolicited e-mails/SMS/calls from various marketing companies trying to sell you the product you are not interested in.
Also, you just can't simply publicly share your personal information for various reasons. It is as simple as that.
You don't want any random person from any part of the world spy on your personal information.
Yes, if the privacy protection is not on, your information is accessible for every single person around the world.
There comes the need of Privacy Protection. Like I said some companies charges separately every year for Privacy Protection but with NameCheap, it is Free.
Also, you can not be smart and enter fake information because there is a regulatory authority ICANN that keep watch on all the domain names.
So I think Privacy Protection is very crucial.
So here, I'll use NameCheap for the sake of this example.
Go to NameCheap and search for the domain name. You've already created a list of some good names that we have discussed in the previous step.
Enter the domain name in the search bar and hit the search button.
If your domain is available, you'll see the option to add the domain to the cart. Click "Add to cart" and you'll see the "Checkout" button at the bottom.
Then you'll see the details of the domain name.
You need to cross-check everything. Check the domain name is spelled right. Because once the domain is registered, you can not change it.
You can see WhoisGuard which is a Privacy Protection that I mentioned earlier and you can see its FREE FOREVER!
Enter Promo Code if you have any (you can message me on Facebook for this if you want to) and click Apply. You'll see the subtotal will get changed to discounted value if the promo code is valid.
Go ahead and click "Confirm Order"
On the next page, you'll be asked to create an account. You just have to enter basic information to create an account.
Enter all the details and hit the "Create Account and Continue" red button.
On the next page, you need to enter payment details. You can choose to make payment through Credit Card, Paypal, or Account Funds.
My preferred method is either a Credit Card or Paypal.
Enter the Credit card or Paypal details and hit the "Continue" button. You will see the confirmation of your order on this page.
Also, check your e-mail, you'll receive an e-mail from Namecheap with all the details of your domain name. Keep it safe.
Congratulations! You've registered a Domain Name for your Blog!
We now need to buy a Web Hosting Plan that leads us to our next step!
You can choose any other domain registrars like Godaddy, Name.com, or NameSilo.com by following the same procedure.
OFFER
Get the Domain Name FREE with Web Hosting Plan.
- Blue Host
- HostGator
I've been using both these Web hosts for many years and recommend the same. The services such as server uptime, customer support, pricing, additional benefits such as a free SSL certificate, a FREE domain name makes these hosts a good choice.
So you can skip buying a Domain name from NameCheap since you'll get it FREE with BlueHost or HostGator hosting plans.
PS: You can either choose BlueHost or HostGator.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:3
- Characteristics of a Good Domain Name – It should be pronounceable, memorable, short, keyword-rich, brandable, trademark free, has only characters, etc.
- How to get Domain Ideas– Brainstorming, Use Domain Suggestion Tool.
- Where to buy Domain Name from. Namecheap, Godaddy is the best one. We have chosen Namecheap because it offers Privacy Protection for forever!
Step-4: Buy Reliable Web hosting Plan
So, the next step is to buy a web hosting plan. There are tons of Web hosting companies out there but the reliability, customer support, server uptime matters the most. If your webs hosting is not good, you'll indirectly lose a lot of money.
Also, if your web hosting is not good, it will cause slow website loading which is a ranking factor. If your website loads slow, Google wouldn't like it and wouldn't rank it.
Also, I've seen many people complain about bad customer support. They keep contacting their web hosting support team but they aren't bothered to respond.
It becomes very frustrating when you don't get a response from your web hosting company.
Think about the situation that your website has ranked for competitive keywords which account for huge traffic on your website.
Suddenly due to technical problems on the web host side, your website goes down. You will lose a lot of money.
I've faced this problem in 2016 when iPhone 7 was launched. I used to rank #1 for "iPhone 7 Release Date" and my daily income from this website was between $200-$300.
Due to bad web hosting, my website went down for about a week and it resulted in a loss of about $3000 in 7 days.
Not just that, because my website down for 7 days, Google de-ranked my website that brought website traffic to half and it kept on decreasing since then.
Ultimately, my website was thrown to the 2nd page, then 3rd, and then 5th. The traffic became almost 0.
You don't want to face this problem. Hence, you must choose a reliable web hosting service right from the beginning.
You can learn from my mistake so that you can save time & money (mental disturbance is not considered).
Blue Host & HostGator are such reliable companies. I've been using both of them.
If you are just starting, I'd recommend going with BlueHost. It is much easier to set up a WordPress blog with BlueHost.
Why BlueHost?
Reliable
Bluehost is one of the reliable web hosting company started back in 2003, having head office in Utah, United States. It is one of the largest web hosts hosting 2 million domains (at the time of writing this post)
Easy to Setup
Bluehost is a newbie-friendly web host. You can install WordPress with a few clicks following simple on-screen instructions. Its user-interface is pretty decent and you can navigate to different options pretty easily.
FREE DOMAIN NAME
BlueHost offers a FREE domain name with the purchase of their web hosting plan which is a good thing for the beginners. You can save those $10 dollars that you'll spend on buying a domain name.
Good Customer Support
One of the most underrated factors that most of the people ignore is the customer support. You should choose a web host that has a good system in place to resolve customer queries. And that too in quick time as you don't want the website to go down for a long time.
Bluehost has an efficient customer support team that helps you sort out the issue through Chat, E-mail or Phone.
Free SSL Certificate
Today, an SSL certificate is kind of a mandatory requirement. It gives visitors confidence about the security of your website. If you have an SSL certificate installed on your website, people will feel safe to make a transaction through your website.
Also, Google loves a website that has an SSL certificate installed.
If you buy an SSL certificate separately, you'll have to spend about $14 every year for the renewal of the SSL certificate. You can get it for FREE with BlueHost.
Unlimited Resources
Unlike other web hosting services, Bluehost offers you…
- Host Unlimited Domains
- Unlimited SSD Storage
- Unmetered Bandwidth
- Unlimited Parked Domains
- Unlimited Subdomains and much more.
Let's go ahead and buy a Blue Host Web hosting.
Buy BlueHost Web hosting Plan
So now you know although there are thousands of web hosts on the internet but you must choose a reliable one and BlueHost is the most reliable hosting service.
Let me walk you through the process of buying a web hosting plan that comes with a FREE domain name. So since you've decided to buy a web hosting from Bluehost, you've already saved $14 (for the domain name)+ $12 (for SSL). So a total of $26 already saved! Let's see how much discount we can get on the hosting plan.
Here are the steps:
Go to BlueHost Website and click on "Get Started".
On the next page, you'll have to choose a web hosting plan.
There are four plans- Basic, Plus, Choice Plus & Pro. They cost $3.95/month, $5.95/month, $6.95/month & $13.95/month respectively.
Since you are a beginner, you should start with a lower plan. Later when your requirements increase, you can upgrade to a higher plan at any time.
You shouldn't also start with the "Basic" Plan as well because it allows you to host only a SINGLE domain. It means if you want to host more than 1 domain on this plan, you can not do so.
I recommend going with a "Plus" plan because here you can host unlimited domains and comes with unlimited resources such as unlimited websites, unlimited disk storage, unlimited bandwidth, etc.
I also wouldn't recommend going with the higher plan as well, as it will be a waste of money at this point.
When you choose a plan, enter the domain name that you want to Register for FREE and use for WordPress Installation. Hit Next.
If the domain is available, you'll be notified of the same. This page will have quite a few sections. Under the Account Information section, you'll have to enter your basic information such as your name Country, Zip Code, E-mail, Phone number, etc.
In the Package Information section, you'll have to select the Plan durations. You can go for a 36 month Plan for a good discount.
In Package Extras, uncheck all the checkboxes as you don't' need any of them.
In the Payment Information section, enter your credit card details, accept terms of service, and hit the Submit button.
You can change the payment method to Paypal as well by clicking "see more payment options"
After you hit the submit button, you'll receive an e-mail and you need to set the password for your account. Click on Create your password and you'll be asked to enter one of your choices.
Enter the password, it should be a combination of Uppercase, Lowercase, digitals, character, and special characters. Once you choose the password, tick the checkbox and hit Next.
Congratulations, you've created a new password!
So the web hosting plan purchase process is completed. It is time to move on and install WordPress.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:4
- What are the Reliable Web Hosting – BlueHost & Hostgator (recommended).
- What makes a web hosting a good choice – Reliability, Good Customer Support, Easy to use etc.
- Purchased Bluehost Web hosting plan.
Step-5: Install WordPress on BlueHost
Point Nameservers:
If your domain registrar is different than BlueHost, it means if you have registered the domain name with NameCheap.com and web hosting from BlueHost, you need to point nameservers to BlueHost.
Here is how you can do it.
- Login to your NameCheap account
- Go to Domains
- Go to Manage
- Go to the NameServers section. Select "Custom DNS" and you'll see options to enter nameservers.
- You can find the nameservers in the e-mail that you have received from Bluehost (Web Hosting company). There are two nameservers generally which looks similar to IP address. After entering the name server, click the small green "right" sign and you'll be able to update the name servers.
- Give it sometime before this change reflects results. It can take up to 24 hours (generally it takes a few mins in most of the cases, 24 hours is the maximum time)
Install WordPress on Bluehost
Login to your BlueHost account and it will start the installation process it is own. When you'll log in to your account, you'll be asked to choose the theme of your choice. You can choose one of your choices or skip this process at the bottom.
It will take a few seconds before WordPress installation is done on BlueHost. Once done, you'll receive the confirmation as below and a blue button "Start Building"
Click this button and you'll be taken to WordPress Admin Dashboard where you can start customizing your blog such as installing a new theme, plugin, set pages, make posts, etc.
The other way of installing WordPress on Bluehost (Installing WordPress with My sites)
- Login to your Web Hosting Account
- Go to My sites from the left-hand side menu.
- Click "Create Site"
- Enter the website name and tagline, click Next.
- Choose the domain name from the drop-down menu.
- Also, choose the directory you want to install WordPress to and Click Next.
Give it some time and the WordPress installation will be completed. Note down the Username and Password for future reference. You'll need this information to log in to Admin Dashboard.
Install WordPress on HostGator
This tutorial guide you to install WordPress on HostGator in case you have purchased web hosting from HostGator instead of BlueHost.
Also, it will show how to update Nameservers on Godaddy if you have purchased the domain from Godaddy instead of NameCheap.
Update Nameservers
- When you buy a domain name and hosting plan, a series of emails from both the companies will arrive instantly with important information that shouldn't be disclosed to anyone.
- Log in to your account on the site you have bought a domain name from and go to my account. Click the "Manage DNS" button against the domain name as shown in the below figure.
- Click "manage" under the Nameserver section.
- Open the email sent by the hosting company and you will find 1st and 2nd nameservers in the email. Below is the screenshot of the email received. from my hosting providers with nameservers.
Copy 1st nameservers and past in the first popup box appears after you click "manage" as discussed in step "b" above.
Do the same for 2nd nameserver and hit the SAVE button. Allow name servers to update which takes a maximum of 24 hours. If you are on Godaddy, the nameservers get updated in 10 mins.
Install WordPress on HostGator
Login to HostGator Webhosting accounts using the information sent by the company through e-mail. Below is the screenshot of my hosting which I've purchased from Hostgator.
Head over to "Software and services" and click "Quickinstall" (if you have bought hosting from other companies than Hostgator, you will find "Softaculous" instead of QuickInstall!
Hit the WordPress block and you will be taken next to install WordPress. Click "Install WordPress" as shown in the below figure.
In the next step, you will be asked to choose the domain you want to install WordPress to. Select the domain name from the drop-down menu.
Enter "Admin Email", "Blog Title", "Admin User", "First name" and "Last Name" and hit "Install WordPress"
The WordPress will get installed on to your domain, note down the credentials (username and password) which will be required later to log in to the admin panel and customize, install themes, and plugins of your choice.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:5
- Point Nameservers if Webhosting and Domain Registers are different.
- Installed WordPress on Bluehost (and HostGator).
Step-6: Do the Basic Setup
Install Theme
The first Impression is the last impression
The default WordPress blog doesn't look impressive in terms of colors and functionality, features. You need to find and install the theme which suits best for your blog.
Although there are lots of free themes available but I'd recommend going for a premium theme if you are serious about blogging.
The premium theme would allow you to remove the footer links and help you brand your blog! It will give you full control over the settings for arranging widgets, sliders, fonts, etc.
You need to make sure the theme you are purchasing has clean coding and the developer followed coding standards.
Also, you need to check the loading time as if the theme is bulky and taking too much time to load, Google is going to dislike that and push your website far away.
I use StudioPress themes for blogs because the work on Genesis Framework which is one of the most powerful and fast loading frameworks.
You can check out all their themes and buy one of your choices. They have different options for all types of blogs be it a lifestyle, Food, Technology, Health, or any other.
If Studiopress is something you cannot afford to be a beginner, you can buy themes from my other favorite seller- MyThemeShop. Go check out all of their themes and buy that you like the most and go with your blog.
Their themes like Schema Pro, SociallyViral are among the most popular WordPress themes on the internet.
Install Plug-ins:
Log in to WordPress Admin Dashboard. You can do so by visiting the URL www.yourwebsitename.com/wp-admin (replace the Domain with yours).
You'll be asked to enter the Username and Password. Enter both and hit Login.
You'll be able to login to Admin Dashboard. Go to Plugins from the left-hand side menu.
Click "Add New"
Here you can search for all the Plugins that I've recommended. They are the basic plugins that you must install right after the WordPress installation process.
Search each of these plugins one by one and install them. Do not active them one-by-one, we will activate all of them in one go.
List of Important Plugins
- Yoast
- Contact Form 7
- WP Super Cache
- Regenerate Thumbnail.
- Smush
- Facebook Like box
- TinyMCE Advanced
- WP-Optimize
Once all the plugins are installed, you can go back to Plugins again from the left-hand side menu. Click the Plugin checkbox that will select all the plugins, choose Active from "Bulk Actions" and hit Apply.
It will activate all the plugins in one go.
Let's see how to configure these plugins.
Configure Yoast SEO Plugin-
Follow these steps to get basic settings done. There is more to do, let's do the basics done.
So now, you have the basic Yoast plugin configuration done. Let's do some more to make our blog more SEO friendly.
Go to SEO > General > then Go to the "Features" tab and turn on all the features.
Go to SEO > General > then go to "Webmaster Tools" and you'll see Google's section is already configured. Because we have used this option at the time of configuring Google Search Console.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Generaland you'll see the below screen. Title Separator is already configured, so you can leave it as it is or can change with any of your choices.
This is a Home page settings and we need to configure Home Page Title and Meta Description. The Title should be descriptive so that Google easily knows what your blog is all about. The best settings for Home Page Title is already done. So leave it as it is.
In the Meta description, describe your blog in 160 words. You can include the important keyword here. It will help with SEO. Leave other settings as it is and hit the Save button. You can upload a Logo/Avatar image if you like.
It will help with building authority in Google's eyes.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Content-Type. Leave these settings as it is.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Media. Change "Redirect attachment URLs to the attachment itself?" to YES.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Taxonomies. In Categories, change it to "No". In Tags, change it to "No". In Formats, change it to "Disable". Leave Category URL settings as it is and hit the Save button.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Archives. Disable Author & Date Settings and hit the Save button.
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > Breadcrumbs. Disable Breadcrumbs settings (I don't like it turn on as it may cause the problem in Google Search Console).
Go to SEO > Search Appearance > RSS. Leave the settings as it is.
Go to SEO > Social and Configure social profiles by following on-screen instructions.
That's all for Yoast SEO Plugin settings.
Configure Contact Form 7 Plugin-
Go to Contact > Contact Forms and you'll see the shortcode as highlighted in red below. Copy this code and paste it everywhere you want to display the form. How Amazing!
It will create a very neat and clean contact us form without any coding knowledge.
Here is how this contact form will look like. It looks so professional that some experienced coder has coded this form. People who want to contact you can enter their details and hit the Send button.
That e-mail will land in your inbox.
This shortcode is generally placed on the Contact Us page or in the Footer section of the blog. I prefer on Contact us page.
Set Permalink
Go to Settings from the left-hand side menu and then to Permalink. Choose the option that I've highlighted in red and click Save.
It will make your website URLs Search Engine Friendly which helps in ranking your website better in search results.
Created social media account on all the popular websites such as Facebook, Twitter, etc. Here is the list of popular social media sites
- Linked
- Flipboard.
Create Basic pages
There are a few necessary pages that a blog should have. I'll discuss the least necessary pages however which additional page you want to add is solely your choice.
Contact us –Contact us page is really necessary for a blog or a website as this is the most effective way for the visitors to contact you.
They can contact you via the "contact" form in case they have any queries or suggestions that could improve the blog.
About me/us – In order to win the trust of the people, you must tell visitors about who you are! People like to know your experience, journey, what all you have achieved in blogging career, and what you want to achieve moving forward.
Privacy Policy– A Privacy Policy page is very important. In fact, I'd say its a mandatory requirement today as you have to disclose how do you care about the privacy of the users coming to your website and if you are collecting their personal information. You need to disclose everything on this page.
Setup Google Analytics:
Monitoring the website's statistics are very important. You need to monitor how much daily traffic your website is getting, which keywords your blog is ranking for, how much organic traffic it gets and from which country.
Which page gets the most number of views, which page people land and exit, what is the bounce rate, what is the navigation pattern of the users coming to your website etc.
If you track all these things, you can make strategies moving forward to improve your blog. If you see some keywords are ranking on the second page, you can work on those posts and try to improve the ranking for these keywords. It will increase traffic.
Google Analytics tells a lot of things about your website, so you must install it. Here is how to go about it.
- Go to Google Analytics and you'll be asked to log in. Use your Gmail account and login to Google Analytics. Enter the Account name (could be your website name) and hit "Next"
- Select "Web" on the next page as you will be using Google Analytics for your blog, not the App.
- Enter website name, Website URL, Select Category of your blog, Select Time Zone, and hit "Create"
- Accept terms & conditions and click "I Accept"
- It will look like this. There are two important things that I've highlighted in red- Tracking ID & Bunch of Code. We will use either of them to connect the domain with Analytics. Let's do it. I prefer Tracking ID.
- Go to WordPress Dashboard and install a Plugin called "Monster Insights (I've shown how to install a plugin). Activate the plugin once installed.
- Click Insights from the left-hand side menu and then "settings"
- Copy tracking ID from Google Analytics and paste in here. Click the Save button on the top right corner. That's All! You will start to see spikes in Google analytics in a few days when people will start to visit your blog.
Setup Google Search Console (webmaster tool)
Do you want to submit your website to Google so that you become eligible to receive organic traffic from Google? Do you want to know which keywords your blog is ranking for? and how many clicks a particular keyword is sending?
Do you want to know if there is any technical issue with your blog? Do you want to know if Google has punished your website? Do you want to know how fast/slow your website loads on Desktop or Mobile?
These are the important points that decide the performance of your blog. How would you get to know all that?
You can do that with the help of Google Search Console!
Here is how you can set up Google Search Console for your blog
- Go to Google and type Google Search Console. Open the first link and you'll see this page.
- Click Start Now and You'll be asked to enter your Gmail details. Do it and you see a screen like this.
- Use the right option to set up Google Search Console for your blog. Enter the website URL and click Continue.
- It will take a few seconds to fetch data and then present you with the following options. It will ask you to verify the domain. There about 5 ways you can verify the domain but I like HTML Tag the most.
- Scroll down to HTML tag and copy this small piece of code with the "COPY" button.
- Now Login to the WordPress dashboard. Go to SEO from the left-hand side menu and then "General".
- Paste the code you have copied earlier in the "Google Verification Field' option and hit "Save changes"
- Now go back to Google Search Console and hit "VERIFY". If the code is placed right, you will get a success notification.
- Its time to Submit a Sitemap in Google Search Console so that your blog is crawled easily. Go back to SEO>General>Features and turn Sitemap feature ON.
- Go back to Search Console and head over to Sitemap. Enter "sitemap_index.xml" after the domain name as highlighted in red below and hit the SUBMIT button. You will see the "Success" message after the sitemap is successfully submitted.
That's all for setting up Google Search Console!
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:6
- Does the basic setup. Installed theme.
- Installed Plugins
- Configure Yoast SEO Plugin
- Configured Contact Form 7 Plugin.
- Set Permalink.
- Created Social Media Accounts.
- Created Basic pages – About, Contact, Privacy Policy.
- Setup Google Analytics.
- Setup Google Search Console.
Step-7: Add Content (Posts)
By now you have a structure ready and it's time to add content to the blog. All the basic things are done and you can go ahead with publishing the posts.
Google prefers blogs that are regularly updated hence it becomes important that you set up a schedule and publish the content on a regular basis. It helps in ranking the posts in search results.
If you are a good writer and have in-depth knowledge, you can write the articles on your own however this job can be outsourced to professional writers as well if you can't write or don't have spare time.
Of course, it will add some additional cost to your pocket because an article writer charges based on a single word. An ideal content writer can charge between $10 to $20 per 100 words. The experts may charge way more.
There are several places you can find good writers at, such as Facebook groups (my favorite), Freelancer.com, DigitalPoint Forum, PPH, Craigslist, Worknhire, Upwork, etc.
If you want to write your own and wondering what topics you should be writing about so that your blog could attract visitors, I've published a detailed article on this topic. See it here
Set a target to publish at least 10-12 posts every week in the beginning. When you have 70-80 posts you can reduce the frequency but you still have to maintain a schedule.
For example instead of 10 posts every week, you can reduce it to 7, then to 3, and then 1 post every week.
Keep publishing the content for the first 2-3 months continuously and when you have sufficient posts live on your blog, its time to promote it.
Share the post every time you publish a new one on Facebook. It helps with a kick-starting and initial boost that a new blog needs.
When you have enough posts, its time to promote your blog. With that let's move on to our next step.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:7
- Make Strategies to create content.
- Post Content.
Step-8: Promote Your Blog
This is the most difficult and crucial part of a blogging journey as almost everyone easily can follow the process of setting up a blog, but many of them give up when they don't' see visitors coming to their blog.
You need to remember this, you don't have to give up at any cost. Because by now, you've already spent a lot of time, effort, and money, you wouldn't want to give up so easily.
Things start slow and then it picks up momentum.
Here is how you can promote your blog:
- Facebook– Create a Facebook page and invite your friends to like it. It helps with the promotion of your blog as when you have people liking the page and if you post any update on your page, it will deliver to all the people who liked the page. This update could be the new post you've published on your blog.
Apart from it, you can share the posts on your Facebook profile. If you do that, all your Facebook friends will be able to see your post. They will like it, share with their friends and it will create a snowball effect.
- Twitter – Share your posts on Twitter account. If you already have a twitter account with many followers, take advantage of this account. Share your post on twitter and if they like it, they will share with others.
- Be Active on Forums – Find forums where your targeted audience hangout and engage yourself in forum discussion. Occasionally post your blog URL in forum posts.
- Blog commenting – Find related blogs and engage with on the blog posts. You share your thoughts in the comment section after reading the blog post and include your blog URL. Do not SPAM by going to every single comment section and giving away your blog URL.
- Build Relationships with fellow bloggers – Find and build a relationship with fellow bloggers. If you are able to build a good relationship with other bloggers, you can ask them for a favor by including your blog URL in their blog posts.
- Join Facebook Groups – Facebook groups are the real goldmine. You will get the most targeted audience in Facebook groups. For example, if you blog about Technology, you can join Facebook groups that are related to Technology, Phones, Tech Guides, Laptops, etc.
- Publish Guest Posts-Find blogs in your Niche, go to their Contact Us page, copy their e-mail, and send them a line of e-mail asking for publishing your article. You can provide the webmaster a well-researched article that may interest their audience. It is a win-win situation for both, you'll include your blog URL in the article and the webmaster will get FREE content.
- Sponsored Post- This process is the same as promoting a blog through the Guest post. The only difference here is that you offer the blog owner compensation for publishing your article. This method is quicker than the previous one.
- Word-of-Mouth Marketing -Mention your blog while talking to your friends. Tell them what you blog about and what's your plan going forward. Request them to mention your blog to their friends as well to create a snowball effect.
- Gain Natural Backlinks– Publish a high-researched informative article on your blog and share it on social media. If People find it helpful, they will mention your blog URL on their blog which will send Google a positive signal and your blog may climb up in ranking that will eventually increase traffic to your blog.
There are many other advanced tactics that are beyond the scope of this post. If you need help, you can catch me on Facebook.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:8
- Promote your Blog through Facebook, Twitter, Facebook Group.
- Create Backlinks with Forums & Blog Comments.
- Collaborations with blog owners.
- Guest posts strategy.
- Sponsored post strategy.
Step-9: Make Money
So when you see the people started to come on your blog, its time to monetize them. You can monitor the performance of your blog through Google Analytics that we've configured above. Now you know the importance of installing Google Analytics.
There are several ways, some of the most famous methods are:
- Advertisements – Google Adsense, Media.net, Ezoic, Infoinks etc.
- Affiliate Marketing – Join Amazon Associate, ShareASale, Commission Junction, ClickBank, JvZoo, Impact, Digitstore24 networks, and promote the products that fit into your blog. You can write reviews, Top 10 type posts, and Comparison posts.
- Sponsored Posts – Sell sponsored posts on your blog. If your blog gets good traffic, you can good money out of it.
- Create an E-book and sell– You can use your knowledge and create a few page e-book and sell it on your blog. Your e-book has to be exceptionally good in order to get sold.
There are many other methods you can monetize your blog with. I've written down a detailed post to explain many ways. You can also catch me on Facebook if you need any suggestions.
Here is the quick recap of what all we have done in Step:9
